Nice, that was a selenium plate 1/2 wave rectifier, often they fail, and if you replace with modern diode…it overcharges…. Of course they are more decoration than useful now, but I still keep my old one
When welding with tin, FIRST the terminal and the cable tip are heated, AFTER the tin is applied. That is a correct weld. I have more than 30 years of Industrial experience.

Why did you refit the two 'bakelite' panels on the outside of the case?
